South African power utility Eskom said it would implement scheduled power cuts from Wednesday mid day to Thursday morning to replenish diminishing emergency generation reserves.
Regions with the highest levels of fossil-fuel pollution had the highest death rates. They included eastern North America, Europe and Southeast Asia, which includes China and India, CBS News reported.

Grid companies will steadily increase the amount of power purchased from clean generation sources from 28.2% in 2020 to 40% by 2030, according to a draft policy from the National Energy Administration (NEA), verified by a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

A controversial mine that extracts 100,000 tonnes of coal a year in Canterbury will close.
About 35 jobs will be lost from Bathurst Resources closing its Canterbury Coal Mine near Darfield.
The company has blamed the cost of regulatory processes for the closure.
